This chapter examines students’ reasons and motivations for studying Islamic theology in Turkey, employing aspiration as a central analytical concept. It identifies two core themes—‘knowing Islam’ and ‘knowing oneself’—and shows that piety was only one among several, often overlapping, sources of aspiration within the complex web of motivations expressed in their narratives.
