Compared to other parts of late medieval Europe, the number of popular protests in Scotland is strikingly low, even allowing for the lower volume of sources. The fact that popular unrest seems to have been unusually limited in Scotland is important for understanding broader trends in the history of popular protest. This chapter furthers the discussion by comparing what is known about Scotland with existing models and interpretations of revolts across late medieval Europe. Although Scotland had fewer revolts than most other parts of Europe, it displayed many of the characteristics identified elsewhere. When revolts spurred on by natural disasters, such as disease and famine, and when the role of women are considered, Scotland fits easily within broader trends identified in the secondary literature.
