The National Science Foundation’s ADVANCE Program
摘要
In this chapter, the authors, current and past National Science Foundation (NSF) program officers provide an historical overview of the impacts of the NSF’s ADVANCE program since its inception in 2001. The NSF ADVANCE program, formally titled “ADVANCE: Organizational Change for Gender Equity in STEM Academic Professions,” was until 2025 a federal grant program that was part of the NSF’s portfolio of programs intended to broaden participation in STEM. NSF ADVANCE made awards to US nonprofit academic institutions of higher education to address gender-based systemic inequities in academic workplaces. The program also supported nonacademic organizations, such as STEM professional societies, to address systemic gender equity issues within their STEM disciplines or to work with their members to promote gender equity. The chapter shares three types of learning from the ADVANCE program: learning from the ADVANCE grantees, learning about the ADVANCE program, and learning by the ADVANCE program that helped refine program design and focus.
