Advocates and Allies Programs
摘要
Recent decades have brought increasing awareness of gender inequity within academia, particularly in the traditionally male-dominated disciplines of engineering and computer science. Further, it is increasingly apparent that addressing gender inequities requires the participation of men, especially in units that are dominated by men. Developed by North Dakota State University as part of a National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant, Advocates and Allies programs explicitly address this need by providing a structure to intentionally engage men to better support gender equity. In this callout, we summarize the rationale for selectively engaging men to support gender equity. Next, we describe the structure of typical Advocates and Allies programs, which has been successfully deployed at over 40 institutions and organizations across the nation. We conclude by discussing program successes, challenges, and opportunities for future growth.
