This chapter explores how ideologies of English—especially those of Standard English and economic and colonial power—persist in society. The chapter investigates business contexts, the global service industry, marketing contexts, political contexts and legal contexts. While these dominant and powerful ideologies loom large in many spaces, the true story of English in society is one of diversity. Standard English ideologies are often counterproductive in business contexts, and they lead to injustice in legal settings. Moreover, in a practical sense, if you are selling a product or a political candidate, then using non-standard English is often the best strategy.

摘要

This chapter explores how ideologies of English—especially those of Standard English and economic and colonial power—persist in society. The chapter investigates business contexts, the global service industry, marketing contexts, political contexts and legal contexts. While these dominant and powerful ideologies loom large in many spaces, the true story of English in society is one of diversity. Standard English ideologies are often counterproductive in business contexts, and they lead to injustice in legal settings. Moreover, in a practical sense, if you are selling a product or a political candidate, then using non-standard English is often the best strategy.
