English in the USA and Australia
摘要
This chapter examines the history and evolution of English in the USA and Australia—which have been referred to variously as “settlement” colonies or as part of the “Inner Circle”. British settlers largely overwhelmed and displaced the original inhabitants of these regions. US English is one of, if not “the”, most powerful English(es) in the world. Australian English is perhaps lesser known to many, but it is a powerful English in the Asian-Pacific region. This chapter examines the historical and social tensions of these Englishes and their speakers, as well as how these tensions have evolved with technology.
