Most deltas face greater exposure, vulnerability, and risks associated with natural hazards due to growing population pressure, intense aquaculture, urbanization, and the effects of global climate change. Developing policies and plans for preparedness, mitigation, and adaptation requires mapping deltas’ risk profiles and sensitivity. A socioecological systems viewpoint is not usually systematically incorporated into vulnerability and risk assessments, which might result in incomplete evaluations because they primarily focus on social aspects. Within risk assessment frameworks, ecosystem services, which connect ecosystem functioning and human well-being, can be utilized to describe the interdependencies between the environment and society more accurately. Therefore, we suggest an updated indicator-based paradigm for socioecological ecosystems in delta habitats, building on the vulnerability and risk evaluation systems that are currently in use. This framework is backed by a list of ecosystem service indices that were found through a thorough literature review. This updated framework helps address risk and vulnerability in coastal deltas. It makes it possible to evaluate various hazards and risks to socioecological systems both inside and outside deltas and to develop management strategies and policies that are more specifically focused on lowering the risks associated with natural hazards.
