Terminology is something typical of each discipline, as the ensemble of names of the objects and phenomena with which that discipline deals. It has developed through the history of each discipline, adding new terms every time an object, or a phenomenon, or a descriptive quality was discovered, or new models were proposed. This chapter presents an overview of the generation of scientific and technical terminology, highlighting how the new terms were often rooted in deeply humanities-based cultural backgrounds, from the use of root-words pertaining to ancient languages, meant to foster perceptions of scientificity and abstractness, to the expression of the features that the discoverer perceived as more striking, and to attention to myths and beliefs.
