The makeup of the characters in Fat Ham falls within two distinct age groups—The youngins (Juicy, Larry, Opal, Tio) and The Elders (Tedra, Rabby, Pap, Rev). This separation of characters allows for a nuanced and distinct view of Black families and the expectations that are passed down from generations. While much focus has been drawn to The youngins and their desire to break away from those expectations, as a dramaturg on a 2024 production of Fat Ham at PlayMakers Repertory Company I saw this paradigm shift. During table work, in-depth conversations centered the Black community and where familial expectations originated. It became increasingly clear that the experience of playing characters who are seen as antagonistic in their views (even when those views are rooted in love) is a complex situation to navigate. In an interview with the actors who played “The Elders,” we will explore the truth these actors found in their characters, how these characters represent generational trauma, and the moments of love and caring the actors found within the text.
