Designing for Disaster: A Holistic Approach to Architectural Resilience

Facilities, buildings, and communities worldwide seek better resilience and infrastructure to deal with crisis-like situations. The modern-day world needs to build buildings so that relevant people such as police, firefighters, and medical staff can easily access them in an emergency. Furthermore, with climate change and environmental challenges, buildings must be resilient against environmental damage and climate change events. The aim of this paper is to explore how infrastructural design can enhance resilience and adaptability to mitigate crises such as natural disasters and climate change. It seeks to provide insights into designing infrastructures that can withstand environmental challenges while ensuring quick access for emergency services and long-term functionality. The methodology adopted in this study includes a systematic analysis of architectural resilience through real-life case studies such as the Dutch mentality Amsterdam housing development and the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. These examples demonstrate the effectiveness of resilient and adaptable infrastructure. The study employs design thinking as a framework to develop strategies for disaster recovery and mitigation, emphasizing the importance of robustness, redundancy, and rapidity in design. Key concepts such as architectural resilience and building adaptability are discussed, highlighting infrastructure designed for various crises with a high level of resilience. With comprehensive analysis, this paper offers insights that policymakers and architects can use to design infrastructure that is adaptable and resilient, thus enhancing crisis management and recovery strategies.
