The appeal of a built environment influences its walkability, and efforts to enhance this appeal vary based on the size of the city and its geographical context. In small towns, features like paved surfaces and promenades improve walkability, while reduced traffic contributes to tranquillity, especially in urban centres. The presented study conducted in Slovenia explores the correlation between public open spaces and walkability. Using spatial analysis, a survey questionnaire, and statistical analysis, the study answers the research question: Is there a correlation between different types of public open space and walkability? This dual approach, combining objective spatial analysis with subjective user feedback, is crucial for understanding how public open spaces contribute to walkability in small urban environments, and also ensures the statistical validation of the results. Residents of 33 towns answered the questionnaire, and the spatial analysis results are shown for two towns where walkability was rated below average (Litija = 3.05) and above average (Slovenske Konjice = 3.62; average = 3.27). The research findings clearly show a connection between walkability and the prevalence of promenades or paved surfaces in smaller towns. However, the results from Slovenian towns differ from previous studies, as it was impossible to establish a clear connection between parks and walkability. This study highlights the significance when analysing walkability of considering the size of the town, the morphological characteristics of its ground plan type, and its geographical location. These factors are essential for understanding how urban design impacts pedestrian accessibility and movement within different environments.
