The universal shortage of resources for invertebrate conservation, and uncertainties over the best ways to deploy limited funding and expertise for the greatest benefits necessitates consideration of other ways in which insects might benefit from wider conservation agendas or approaches. The three editorials treated in this chapter consider some of these wider strategies and explore some possible ways in which insects may participate in conservation programmes that extend beyond their immediate specific needs through site preservation and protection. Insects can then become ‘tools’ in wider conservation endeavour but remain a key focus in the programmes that are developed.
