SNOMED CT’s® logical model provides the core components that support the complex desiderata of an effective medical vocabulary. The logical model is built from three core types of component: concepts, descriptions, and relationships. This provides the foundations for a concept-oriented, multilingual polyhierarchy in which the meanings of the codes are defined through formal relationships to other codes. This chapter explores SNOMED CT’s® logical model, the three core component types, and their respective identifiers and data properties.
