SNOMED CT’s® design is based on decades of experience with medical vocabularies and the learnings that have emerged about the requirements of its intended users. One of the seminal papers in this area, which has directly influenced the design of SNOMED CT®, is James Cimino’s “Desiderata for Controlled Medical Vocabularies in the Twenty-First Century” [1]. This is commonly known in the SNOMED CT® community as “the Desiderata”. This chapter explains the desiderata and how SNOMED CT® has, to varying degrees, adopted them.
