SNOMED CT® is used by anyone who wants to standardise the way clinical data is represented for easier collection, retrieval, sharing, and data analysis. This includes individuals, such as clinicians, patients, and healthcare administrators, and organisations, such as hospitals, vendors, and governments. People and organisations are motivated to use SNOMED CT® for a variety of reasons. Some are motivated through legislative or policy requirements, the ability to claim financial payments, or through strict procurement specifications. Others are motivated by the clear benefits to healthcare delivery, health service management, clinical research, the ability to leverage shared data resources, or commercial competitive advantage. This chapter explores the various types of SNOMED CT® users and the different benefits that SNOMED CT® offers to each of these.
