Whether you are procuring a clinical system from an external provider or developing one inhouse, it is important to clearly document the relevant SNOMED CT® requirements. Depending on the system, this may include the SNOMED CT® edition, dialect, and value sets to be used, how terminology services are to be provided, the techniques to be adopted on the user interface, the terminology components stored in each record, the types of reports and queries to be available, and the minimum maintenance requirements. Other important considerations include the expected skills and capabilities of the product development team, and the level of training and support available for users. This chapter explores the SNOMED CT® implementation requirements that should be documented prior to procuring or developing a clinical system.
