SNOMED CT® is a clinical terminology designed to support different languages and dialects. While the number of languages and dialects in which SNOMED CT® is available is growing, further translation efforts are needed. In some countries, this may be required by legislation. In others, it is needed simply to ensure that the meaning of the terms can be correctly understood by users. While translation is usually thought of as a process that moves from one language to another, the importance of translating into regional and user-group dialects (e.g. patient friendly terms) is increasingly being recognised. This chapter explains the principles, techniques, challenges and processes of SNOMED CT® translation. It then explores available tooling and training that can support the SNOMED CT® translation process.
