The international edition of SNOMED CT® is designed to be useful across different healthcare systems for international interoperability. However, cases often arise in which content of national or local significance needs to be added. To support this, SNOMED CT® provides a mechanism to build extensions to the international edition. This chapter explores the purpose, scope, and logical design of SNOMED CT® extensions and editions. It then explains the types of tools and skills required in their development.
