SNOMED CT’s® core foundation is based on description logic (DL). This enables the hierarchical structure to be automatically inferred from the authored concept definitions and for the consistency of these definitions to be tested. Additionally, it allows users of SNOMED CT® to query over its clinical meanings using information that has been inferred from the original concept definitions. This chapter explains the Web Ontology Language (OWL 2) used to represent SNOMED CT® and the key DL principles on which SNOMED CT® is based.
