SNOMED CT® contains hundreds of thousands of concepts published within each SNOMED CT® release. In addition to these, SNOMED International provides a formal language (compositional grammar) for defining new clinical meanings using a combination of published concepts (expressions). This enables SNOMED CT® to represent millions of distinct clinical meanings in a computable way. This chapter explains the compositional grammar syntax for representing SNOMED CT® expressions.
