One of the most important extensibility mechanisms in SNOMED CT® is the reference set (colloquially known as a “refset”). Reference sets provide a formal but flexible structure that supports a variety of different use cases. These include listing a simple set of codes for data entry, defining dialect-specific language preferences, distributing maps between code systems, and representing the rules of SNOMED CT® itself. This chapter explores the structure, purpose and main types of SNOMED CT® reference sets.
