SNOMED CT® is a multilingual clinical terminology. It is a building block for semantic interoperability, a common language for healthcare, an ontology, and an enabler of powerful data analytics. This first chapter introduces SNOMED CT® by explaining what it is from a range of perspectives and also describing some of the things that it is not.
