Transformation of MetaHumans for a Generic XR Workflow
摘要
This paper introduces a novel workflow for creating realistic 3D avatars that combines the high-quality output of MetaHuman tools with cross-platform compatibility across multiple game engines. Traditional avatar creation methods often restrict artists to proprietary ecosystems or limit anatomical customization. Our approach addresses these limitations through an eight-stage pipeline that integrates photogrammetry capture, MetaHuman processing, 3D wrapping techniques, and custom-built tools. The workflow begins with detailed photogrammetry of human subjects, processes facial data through MetaHuman’s animation systems, and then transfers custom body shapes via specialized wrapping techniques. Critical to our innovation is the conversion of MetaHuman’s proprietary animation system to industry-standard blendshapes compatible with the ARKit standard, enabling both facial tracking and lip synchronization across different rendering platforms. The pipeline culminates in the generation of a Mixamo-compatible body rig that maintains the photorealistic quality of MetaHuman while functioning in any game engine supporting the FBX format. Our custom tools streamline this process, allowing experienced users to create fully functional, anatomically accurate avatars within two to four days. This methodology represents a significant advancement in balancing the competing demands of photorealism, customization flexibility, and cross-platform compatibility in real-time 3D avatar creation.
