Enabling Digital Spaces: Bringing Gaussian Splats Alive in XR
摘要
Bringing physical spaces into digital environments remains a core challenge in extended reality (XR). This work explores how Gaussian splatting–introduced in late 2023–can enhance the quality of 3D reconstructions for XR applications. We present a modular pipeline that combines photogrammetry and Gaussian splatting to build and enable immersive, interactive digital spaces. The strengths and limitations of these techniques are examined from a practical perspective, focusing on realistic cases such as reflective surfaces and large-scale environments. We also share lessons learned during development and deployment, covering hardware demands, data privacy concerns, and the need for adaptable workflows. The goal is to provide insights for others navigating the evolving landscape of XR-driven scene digitisation.
