This paper presents three XR (Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality) case studies that showcased knowledge transfer between Academia and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). The aim is to illustrate the real-world process and impact of XR technology adoption in SMEs, highlighting both opportunities and challenges from a business perspective. Developed under the UK-based Centre for Digital Innovation (CDI), these projects focused on accelerating digital technology adoption. The CDI supported SMEs by translating R&D into practical solutions, fostering innovation, and enhancing digital skills through online platforms. The wider initiative collaborated with four universities and industry experts. Many SMEs were offered expert support in AI, cybersecurity, industrial digitalization, and immersive tech. For each case, bespoke XR prototypes were developed to meet SME requirements, and feedback was gathered directly from SME leadership through interviews. The case studies demonstrate how XR can augment SME practices and the challenges they face.
