Eating disorders are biopsychosocial illnesses that compromise the health and wellbeing of children, adolescents, and adults. This chapter will focus on the eating disorders recognized in DSM-5, the role of the growth chart in early recognition, elements of the history, physical examination, and laboratory workup for youth with eating disorders, and medical complications including criteria for hospitalization, prevention of refeeding syndrome, and how to begin and continue the process of refeeding.
