The neurobiology of pain in Fibromyalgia (FM) is complex. It includes alteration in pain processing in the affective-emotional and sensory-discriminative brain networks, an imbalance in neurotransmitters and a heightened pain perception. Dysfunction in the descending inhibitory pathways is also a contributing factor that furthers pain sensitivity. Affected patients may exhibit distinctive voice characteristics based on the premise that pain-associated vocalization has distinctive acoustic features, such as an increase in pitch and loudness. A comprehensive approach to FM patients with voice disorders is needed to refine treatment strategies.
