Sleep disorders are very common in Fibromyalgia (FM). The most common are non-restorative sleep, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS). The pathophysiology of sleep disorders in FM includes a disturbance in the hypothalamic-Pituitary-axis (HPA), sympathetic hyperactivity, and other anatomic factors. While there are no studies on the association between sleep disturbances and dysphonia in FM patients, parallels can be drawn from the known impact of sleep disorders on voice. Autonomic nervous system dysfunction and obesity are the most common suggested causes of dysphonia in FM patients with sleep disorders. A better understanding of the link between sleep disorders and voice in FM may assist in enhancing patient care.
