Fibromyalgia (FM) is associated with muscle dysfunction that can lead to reduced muscle strength, endurance, and maximal voluntary contraction. Proposed mechanisms include altered metabolism, mitochondrial dysfunction, and impaired oxygenation. Inactivity, fear of pain, and depression are also contributing factors. Given that the larynx is a musculoskeletal structure, voice disorders in FM patients are likely due to disease-induced laryngeal muscle dysfunction. Impairment in breathing, high cervical muscle tension, and postural imbalance are also factors in the pathophysiology of dysphonia in FM patients, often leading to functional and structural voice disorders.
