Ethnographic writing navigates temporality through choices of tense, narrative structure, rhythm, and voice, and these decisions shape the reader’s experience as well as the ethical and analytical force of a text. We examine how temporal positioning establishes the narrator’s authority and proximity, and how grammatical shifts can move the reader between immediacy and retrospection. Ethnographic texts, we suggest, can weave together multiple temporalities, disrupt chronology, or rely on rhythm and repetition to evoke affect and insight. By foregrounding time as a central dimension of ethnographic composition, this chapter invites readers to attend not only to what is written, but also to when and from where it is written.
