Editing is a central part of ethnographic writing—a way of thinking critically with and through language. We offer practical strategies for improving paragraph flow, trimming excess, clarifying titles and headings, and using grammar and punctuation with care. Editing is about clarity and respect—for the ethnographic material and the people we write about. Ethics, too, plays a key role: choices about what to include or omit, and how to describe, shape how lives are represented. Editing, we suggest, is where we write ourselves into the text—with accountability and attention to how our words resonate with readers as well as with those whose lives we seek to understand.
