Finding feasible propulsor designs for these concepts is a highly multidisciplinary task and has to unite, at least, aerodynamic goals with structural requirements. The presented work provides an insight into DLR’s approach on turbomachinery optimization and layout. The paper focuses on DLR’s multidisciplinary design process that is carried out for a generic ultra-high bypass ratio (UHBR) fan within the ASPIRE project as well as the lessons learned out of this, which have been incorporated into a new “Virtual Engine” approach.
