In the conclusion to this book, we gather together and summarise the contributions of the preceding chapters, noting that vernacular security is a vibrant, diverse, yet also relatively young contribution to the field of security studies. We set out what we see as three potentially fruitful paths for future vernacular security research to pursue. First, we advocate for more sustained reflection on the categories of ‘elite’ and ‘non-elite’ and the binary division that often separates them within scholarship in this area. Second, we suggest that there exists scope for greater methodological, empirical and, indeed, conceptual engagement with the ways in which vernacular security is understood, analysed and assessed. Third, we urge greater future attention to the diverse ways in which vernacular discourses resist or reproduce hegemonic security discourses in particular times, spaces, and contexts.
