In 1985 and 1986, the first house tracks were travelling across the Atlantic to Britain. Almost from the beginning, Islington producers were reinterpreting this music, before the dawn of acid house and rave. This chapter celebrates the overlooked history of producers, DJs, promoters and revellers that embraced this music, and who contributed to the acid house and rave scene as it developed in derelict spaces in the borough in the late 1980s. The chapter argues that Islington producers such as Kid Batchelor, steeped in the tradition of reggae and soul sound system culture, was reworking US house music from the start of its transatlantic migration to Britain and transforming it into a uniquely Black British style from the offset; African, African-American, European and Caribbean ideas all fed into the house music as made in London by Batchelor. The chapter then maps the early acid house/rave scene in London and the DJs and producers from Islington involved in this.
