In Mercury Reines merges text with occult symbols to create a book that functions as a supernatural object, animated by alchemical themes of purification and transformation. A Sand Book explores Jewish identity, spiritual renewal, and the possibility for language to express trauma. Its final poem, ‘Mosaic’, records a mystical experience in which the poet felt the sun’s rays enter her body and become the voice of the poem. The chapter shows how Reines’ poetry articulates a magical and occult poetics.
