We are entering a technological culture with increased complexity, hyperconnectivity and increasing worries about the intrusiveness of digital technologies in all aspects of human living and existence, and with implications for the ways we learn. The chapter focuses on aspects of the everyday lives of people, how we make meaning of cultural transformations where technologies increasingly play an important role. What characterizes the interrelationship between humans and technology in contemporary societies, and which implications does these developments have on conceptions of education, learning and literacy? In this chapter I discuss the tension between experiences of intrusiveness versus affordances in using available technological resources. The chapter draws on concepts and perspectives from both sociocultural perspectives and media studies, especially the similarities and differences between mediatization and mediation. Towards the end the chapter highlight the importance of digital literacies and reorientation of education in ways that our future citizens will be able to deal with techno-cultural transformations.
