Digital Communication Strategies for Sustainability Initiatives in Higher Education: Comparative Analysis of Universities in Bahrain, Oman, and UAE
摘要
The study seeks to analyze the digital communication strategies related to sustainability activities and initiatives of three Arab universities (the University of Bahrain, Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, and the United Arab Emirates University). It also explores the themes of university sustainability initiatives (environmental, social, and economic) through a qualitative analysis of the content of the three universities’ official Instagram accounts, covering the period from March 1, 2024, to March 1, 2025, by analyzing the content of 423 posts. The study found that the three universities are committed to promoting sustainability in the environmental, social, and economic spheres, each with its own unique approach. The University of Bahrain takes a holistic approach, combining educational programs, practical activities, digital innovation, and media campaigns. They combine attractive imagery with compelling storytelling to foster a community passionate about sustainability. At Sultan Qaboos University, the focus is largely on social initiatives led by the Community Service Center, although environmental and economic efforts are gradually gaining momentum. Their Instagram presence is based on concise news updates delivered through short videos and rotating posts, interconnected in a consistent and clear visual style. Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates University stands out for its wide range of sustainability projects across three dimensions. The university uses advanced Instagram methods, such as interactive content, influencer collaborations, and data-driven updates, to effectively engage its audience and foster community support for its initiatives.
