Communication is as old as man. It can be simple or complex, depending on the situation or context. No matter the degree of simplicity or complexity, effective communication stands out man among the creatures of God. Every human society, from creation to date, has advanced in its forms and methods of communication. Technology is the greatest aid to communication. It has rapidly changed the way people communicate across time and boundaries—geographical and cultural. No matter the advancement in communication, no society has completely abandoned its primitive modes and media of communication it had adopted over the centuries. Communication scholars have developed many models to depict the process of communication, but to date, no single one has captured the essence of communication. After a review of many of these models in extant literature, the authors in this chapter propose a new model for understanding communication in Africa, particularly in the rural areas where more than two-thirds of the people live. It is called the O-S-M-R/Tricycle Model. It is a conceptual model for understanding communication in Africa. It, essentially, combines the old and the new models of communication, which the authors believe are critical for attitudinal and behavioural change in the continent.
