The America Battalion is one of the two experiences of international guerrilla confluence developed in Latin America. Merging units from the 19th April Movement (M-19), Indigenist Guerrilla Quintín Lame (GIQL), Alfaro Vive ¡Carajo! (Ecuador) and Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA). Its intention was to extend the revolutionary struggle to Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. However, three main factors put an end to this experiment in guerrilla confluence: the ideological differences between the groups, the preponderance of the M-19 in decision-making and the M-19’s commitment to a negotiated solution to the conflict after the failure of the operation to conquer the city of Cali (Colombia). Despite its brief period of action, its imprint is of great relevance as an example of guerrilla convergence that sought the internationalisation of the revolution and unity of action at the continental level.
