Eco-cops
摘要
This chapter invites the reader to consider the role of individual police officers within the broader context of the preceding discussions and seeks to examine key features proposed as essential for cultivating an eco-conscious mindset and attitude within police organisations. Here, ‘eco-cops’ are conceptualised as police officers equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote pro-environmental and pro-climate behaviour and a mindset capable of addressing the cascading impacts of the triple planetary crisis, including the climate crisis. To achieve this, the chapter explores the role of green police education, the development of specific skills such as coordination, and the enhancement of climate-controlled work environments as mechanisms to foster environmentally responsible behaviour among police officers. At the same time, this chapter also addresses challenges related to the recruitment, retention, and rotation of police personnel, highlighting these factors as significant barriers to the effective implementation of eco-cops initiatives. Despite predictions of an expanding security network and the increasing complexity of climate change-related risks and harms, the chapter concludes by advocating for the adoption of a care-oriented and humanitarian mindset among police officers.
