Transplant Liver Pathology

Over the past four decades, liver transplantation has evolved from an experimental intervention to a life-saving standard of care for patients with end-stage liver disease. This remarkable transformation has been driven by significant technical innovations and, most critically, the advent of effective immunosuppressive therapies that have improved graft survival and patient outcomes. The rapid expansion of research in liver transplantation presents new challenges in creating comprehensive, yet accessible, literature that captures the complexity and breadth of the field. As data generation accelerates, artificial intelligence may play an essential role in aggregating, analyzing, and synthesizing emerging knowledge to support clinical decision-making and research advancements. This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of the liver transplantation process, following the chronological sequence of events before, during, and after the procedure. Drawing extensively from our group’s prior publications and chapters, we aim to present a cohesive narrative that integrates foundational knowledge with current advancements. While some content overlap is unavoidable due to the shared basis of earlier work, this chapter seeks to offer both continuity and fresh perspectives on the evolving landscape of liver transplantation.
