Understanding Disease in Skin of Color is an addition to literature in dermatology because, compared to existing literature on dermatology in other skin types, there is paucity in content. This chapter is an introduction to the rest of the book. The author conceives and plans this book to be friendly to every reader in the medical field—just any reader who has, or will have cause, to attend to people with diseases of the skin. The design and intention of this chapter is for it to serve as a pseudo-atlas of the skin. This approach should make the contents attractive to the reader for it is more descriptive and less wordy. The presentation is such that even readers who are totally unfamiliar with skin of color (specifically Black skin) and the diseases they bear will have a high level of confidence in approaching and assessing the patient’s condition and come up with, at least, a provisional diagnosis. The reader of this chapter and the rest of the book needs not commence or maintain the treatment of patients with dermatological conditions but should at least know who to refer the patient to. This chapter provides contents at the level that will take every reader back to the basics; it will be impossible to read this chapter in its entirety twice and not write a properly descriptive referral letter with contents that make the dermatologist feel glad that they have non-specialty colleagues as allies.
