The challenges adults face pursuing postsecondary education have been well identified in a growing body of research focusing on barriers imposed on nontraditional students. The increasingly competitive world of work and the steep curve of labor market success demand that nontraditional learners continue to seek postsecondary education, and often, participate in competency-based programs with high skill transfer to the workplace offered through university continuing education units. Typically, these programs include a practicum framed within policies and practices that impose barriers on students in continuing education programs. This chapter explores the barriers imposed on non-traditional students enrolled in continuing education programs with practicum through a discourse analysis of practices and protocols employed for practicum administration. Current program documentation that reflects institutional policy and is accessible to prospective and current students was reviewed, including website pages, official course outlines, and course syllabi. This chapter also suggests room within our higher education systems to reduce the barriers imposed on continuing education students, particularly by considering how administrative processes are established, utilized, and communicated to students.

摘要
