Developing Empathy and Humanizing Justice-Involved Individuals
摘要
This chapter explores the transformative impact of Hang Time, a grassroots reentry program in Connecticut that provides a safe, judgment-free space for justice-involved individuals. Through compelling personal stories, the chapter highlights the emotional growth and social reintegration of individuals often labeled “high risk” for recidivism. Hang Time’s strength lies in its ability to humanize those with criminal records by fostering empathy, understanding, and authentic connections among participants, community members, and law enforcement. The stories shared, ranging from reconciliation between former rivals to individuals overcoming addiction and trauma, demonstrate how a supportive environment can lead to lasting change. Many attendees, once burdened by stigma and systemic barriers, are now mentors, leaders, and advocates for peace and reform. Hang Time’s inclusive and empowering model has helped reshape perceptions, reduce community violence, and build bridges across social divides. It exemplifies how creating safe spaces and promoting empathy can serve as powerful tools in breaking cycles of incarceration and fostering resilience. This chapter underscores the importance of viewing justice-involved individuals not through the lens of their past, but through the potential of their future.
