We explore how Hang Time has grown from a grassroots support group into a multifaceted, sustainable community initiative. What began as a space for formerly incarcerated men to connect and access resources has expanded to include women (Her Time), youth mentorship (Choices), cultural education (Hang Time Mobile), and the arts (Hang Time Productions). Driven by real community needs, each program was developed with a focus on authenticity, accessibility, and healing. From offering childcare and employment support to organizing historical trips and school-based mentorship, Hang Time’s expansion is grounded in lived experience and sustained through deep community relationships. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization used the pause in in-person sessions to strengthen its infrastructure, build partnerships, and scale its impact. Today, Hang Time represents a model of sustainable programming that centers on dignity, second chances, and transformative justice. It’s more than a program; it’s a movement built by and for the people it serves.
