Today, the nomenclature “smart city” is perhaps the most commonly used and embraced by people, the mass media, stockholders and businesses, and government officials. It is used by government agencies and the private sector because it is a buzzword that much of the target audience understands. Information and communication technology, or ICT, is used in smart cities to improve citizen welfare, assistance from the government, and operational efficiency. Currently, 54% of the world’s population lives in cities. Estimates indicate that about 70% of people on Earth will reside in cities by the year 2050.
