This chapter examines how Swiss geographical societies participated both intellectually and materially in Western imperialism and the capitalist world economy during the long nineteenth century. A spatial analysis of the societies’ global network of corresponding members is followed by a statistical analysis of the regional and thematic interests of the studies published in the societies’ journals between 1860 and 1914. In a qualitative section, correlations between studies on overseas regions such as the U.S. and financial investments of especially the Geneva society’s wealthy members are revealed by means of unpublished archival materials. In conclusion, geographical societies let Switzerland, without a political empire of its own, become an active part of the West’s imperial expansion.

摘要
