Geographical societies are associations for the promotion and dissemination of geographical knowledge. The first of the “modern” age, the Société de Géographie of Paris, proudly celebrated its bicentenary in 2021. Between its founding in 1821 and the end of World War II in 1945, about 250 geographical societies emerged around the world, although some went defunct sooner or later. About half of them still exist today, and more societies have emerged since 1945, especially in capitals of “new” countries and regions of the “old” ones.
