Despite these concerns, invasive mechanical ventilation can be a lifesaving intervention for patients in cardiogenic shock or respiratory failure refractory to non-invasive methods. Considerations regarding the initiation, maintenance, and weaning from invasive mechanical ventilation are discussed here.
