Two planetary-scale conceptual frameworks inform our scientific understanding of Earth: Earth System Science (ESS), the dominant approach, and the supplementary Gaia hypothesis. Both adopt a top‐down perspective on human impacts on planetary processes—illustrated by ESS’s focus on the technosphere and Gaia’s notion of life as an integrated whole—yet diverge in their emphasis. In contrast, a rising interest in Nature-based Solutions (NBS) targets local, bottom-up responses to climate change and ecological degradation by integrating green infrastructure into urban settings. This chapter reviews emerging research on infrastructure that underscores embodied governance, distributed agency, and multispecies interactions, effectively bridging the gap between the natural and the artificial. Such an approach reimagines infrastructure as a living entity—a local echo of Gaia—while examining how NBS might transform cities into multispecies communities in line with Richard Sennett’s urbanist theories. Here, the “Gaian cité” emerges not merely as a descriptive term but as an analytical framework linking ESS with empirical and normative research on human practices within complex, inter-species networks.
